Masahiro Sakurai, Director for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, was invited to Harada's Bar recently. The first episode featuring Sakurai and Harada together in this program debuted earlier today.

Though the two tackled a variety of casual topics, the topic of the Super Smash Bros. series inevitably got brought up during the two's discussion. It was noted that Masahiro Sakurai tends to avoid interacting with other game developers due to his status as the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series.

"Well, I'm really thankful that you came here," said Harada to Sakurai. "But even viewers have this image that you don't appear on a more laid-back program like this."

"... Because of the way Smash Bros. is made, I can't make connections with other games or promote them," responded Sakurai. "If I connect with other games, people will think that that game's character will be added. I'm being careful."

This is typically true with regards to Smash speculation. Whenever Sakurai is seen talking about a certain game or seen interacting with another game developer, fans have the tendency to use that as a basis for Smash character theorizing.

Because of the way Smash Bros. is made, I can't make connections with other games or promote them. If I connect with other games, people will think that that game's character will be added." - Masahiro Sakurai

In one of Sakurai's Famitsu Column's released in the middle of 2020, Masahiro Sakurai basically said as much. Over the years, Sakurai has learned that he has to be careful about talking about other games.

"I normally play a ton of games, but if people find out what kinds of games I’m playing, they have a tendency to start making a fuss over, 'Did Sakurai just confirm so-and-so for Smash?!'" said Sakurai during his column in June 2020.

Needless to say, information like this tends to spread like wildfire on the internet. Fans will often jump to conclusions on who will join the roster next as a result.

"I'm also just not the type to be in media a lot," continued Sakurai during the Harada's Bar episode. "Sometimes I decline interviews, too."

Katsuhiro Harada would then go on to explain that he was like this too as he would even turn down photos up until 2002. Sakurai mentioned how he was able to relate to this mindset.
