NetherRealm Studios might be setting up for a new Mortal Kombat 11 reveal this month

We've been waiting decades for a new live action Mortal Kombat film, and so it was rough to hear the news a few days back that the one slated for an April 16 release was pushed back a week to April 23, but a keen observation from unCAGEDgamez has us speculating that the delay may be well worth the wait.

The given reason for holding the film back makes enough sense: Warner Bros. doesn't want it to have to compete as much with their recently released Godzilla vs. Kong. However, April 23 happens to be the two year anniversary of Mortal Kombat 11's release, and it's been quite some time since we last got or heard about any new DLC for the game.

As unCAGED notes in his recent video post, many of the public-facing members of NetherRealm Studios have been suspiciously quiet about the upcoming film on social media. It's not to say that the likes of Ed Boon (Creative Director), Tyler Lansdown (Community Manager), or Stephanie Brownback (Senior QA Analyst) haven't ever posted about the movie, but one would think we'd see a good bit more than we have, given the circumstances.

Indeed, a quick look over Boon's Twitter sees plenty of recent film and television references (mostly Marvel and DC Superhero media), but mentions of the film that his franchise is based upon are conspicuously absent. Does this serve as clear evidence that something is in the works behind the scenes? Of course not, but this curious case of tight-lipped MK devs could point to their cooking something up and wanting to keep it on the down-low.

It's now been a good four and a half months since Kombat Pack 2 was released on November 17, and while there's been no promise of additional development, Boon did directly note in August that the team was "not even klose to being done with Mortal Kombat 11 yet."

Perhaps KP2 and the three MK actor skins that dropped a week later represent everything NRS had planned, but a leak that correctly predicted Rain, Mileena, and Rambo also made mention of additional characters to be released at a later time.

What better time than during the natural wave of hype that's expected to come from the MK film's release to keep the momentum going with a new reveal? It could be characters, it could just be costumes from the film, or it could be nothing it all, but we wouldn't be entirely surprised to find NRS has something up their sleeve here. Check out unCAGED's video below to hear what he speculates is coming down the pike.
