The Tekken franchise continues to truck on over 25 years after the first game's release, and now it's current entry ranks among the very best in the series' history.

Along with the big announcements for Kunimitsu and Season 4 last night, series director Katsuhiro Harada revealed Tekken 7 recently crossed 6 million copies sold worldwide which also brings the franchise total over 50 million.

This now makes Tekken 7 the third-most selling title for the 3D fighting game series though it still sits behind the likes of Tekken 3 and Tekken 5 which managed to reach 8.3 million and 8.6 million respectively if we factor in Dark Resurrection as well.

Tekken 7 has now also eclipsed its two direct predecessors with 6 and Tag Tournament 2 combined selling around 5 million just to show how much the game has continued to grow this generation.

For the series numbers, Bandai Namco's flagship fighter is seemingly the second-best in the entire genre behind Super Smash Bros.' staggering 60 million though we don't really know where Mortal Kombat stands now following the launch of MK11 and Aftermath — it was previously said to be around 45 million.

Street Fighter also currently sits at the 45 million lifetime sales mark with SF5 reaching 4.7 million discs and digital downloads making their way into the hands of consumers.

All of these numbers continue to show how well the fighting game market has performed during the PS4 and Xbox One era with new titles like Injustice and Dragon Ball FighterZ bringing in millions of players along with revitalization for others like Soul Calibur, Samurai Shodown and Guilty Gear.

The next generation of fighters remains a bit of a mystery considering the only two titles we really know about so far are the PS5 version of Guilty Gear Strive and the Xbox Series X port of Samurai Shodown though the success of many of these franchises should hopefully continue to carry that momentum going forward.

Tekken 7's last million sales came in under 10 months, as they previously revealed it reached 5 million by the end of 2019.

Harada also revealed a special new piece of artwork as celebration for reaching those numbers featuring many of the game's cast participating in a video call together to enjoy the festivities with some funny scenarios which you can check out below.
