Masahiro Sakurai's 611th column for Famitsu Column was recently revealed to the public. Although Sakurai's focus was mostly on the version 8.1 update that dropped not too long ago, he did make a brief comment about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's sales.

"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now reached 20 million copies sold," declared Sakurai. "There are so many people playing the game and the player count keeps rising with every new sale, so I would like to keep working on adjusting and improving the game as best we possibly can for everyone's sake."

According to Nintendo's financial data on their website, the latest update portrays Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's sales at 19.99 million. This places it as the third best Nintendo Switch game thus far.

Previously, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was only second to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — an updated re-release from the Wii U. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe currently sits at 26.74 million units sold worldwide.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a Nintendo Switch game released on March 20, 2020, recently overtook Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with its estimated 22.4 million sales. Ironically, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sales likely benefitted from the COVID-19 global pandemic that confined many to their homes.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is also known for being the highest selling game in the Super Smash Bros. series though this is something that was established some time ago. Super Smash Bros. Brawl's sales were last reported to be 13.32 million while Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U combined managed to sell 14.96 million units.

The latest entry's continued success likely has something to do with the post-launch developer support with the Fighters Pass Vol. 2. As of right now, only Min Min has been announced and released from this package. The other five remaining challengers are scheduled to be released by December 2021, though it's entirely possible this plan has been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.
