The first Krushing Blow in Rambo's Mortal Kombat 11 gameplay trailer is a direct homage to a scene in First Blood

Mortal Kombat 11 fans got their first look at an extra buff armful of Rambo's attacks today thanks to the incoming DLC character's gameplay trailer, and while there's plenty to appreciate on the surface level with beautifully animated attacks and gruesome kill moves, we'd be remiss if we didn't keep a keen eye out for clever references to the source material.

NetherRealm Studios has become increasingly liberal with such references with their DLC guests, and while just over 30 seconds into today's showcase we got a direct callback to the police station scene from First Blood. Minor spoilers ahead for First Blood.

Today marks the 38th anniversary of the theatrical release of 1982's First Blood and so it only makes sense that NetherRealm would save their Rambo showcase for today. While we don't, for a minute, believe this is the only obvious reference we'll be seeing for the Vietnam veteran, it was especially exciting to connect the first few dots.

The attack in question sees our hero perform a sliding leg grab that seems to be useful for going under projectiles and slipping in on enemies who fail to mind their toes, but it was first used on an unsuspecting police officer who... probably didn't deserve to have his day ruined as bad as it wound up.

For those who haven't seen it in a while, Rambo finds himself being held up in a police station in Hope, Washington by some fairly shady officers who clearly don't have his best interests in mind. A few wrong moves causes Rambo to fall into an anxious PTSD episode and start wreaking havoc on his new captors.

He beats down a good handful of officers as he makes his way out from the heart of the building toward the front door, but comes across an officer near said door who is simply carrying some sort of box and hasn't been part of the ordeal at all up until this point. This lends itself to a somewhat comedic moment amid the action as the box-toting victim realizes what's likely about to happen and begs for some hesitation that isn't granted.

Rambo uses the leg takedown on him and then proceeds to elbow him in the face, effectively and unequivocally ruining his weekend. ZachHub did us all the service of splicing the appropriate footage of both MK11 and First Blood together so we can better appreciate the callback.
