It's a pretty simple solution for both

Update: Pay extra close attention to the steps for PlayStation 5, as some users are reporting issues with cross-generation games on the console that will not allow players to download PS5 versions of games under certain circumstances. No reports have surfaced yet about problems with Mortal Kombat 11 specifically, but it's better to be on the safe side.

Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate will be the first major fighting game to make its way to the next generation of consoles that's not through backwards compatibility, and it'll be available shortly after the new systems launch as well.

Current owners of MK11 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be able to upgrade their games to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S respectively to see Mileena in 4K though some questions remained as to how players will be able to access those shiny new versions on release.

Luckily, the process for both new consoles is fairly simple and straight forward especially for players finding themselves in Microsoft's corner come November.

Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate is part of Xbox's new Smart Delivery system which means that the Series X|S should automatically download the next gen version once it becomes available or do so once the disc is inserted โ€” unless you get a Series S which doesn't have a disc drive.

The Sony console counterparts have a couple of more steps to follow and ultimately lead to what is shaping up to be an improved experience across the board.

Disc owners for MK11 will need to insert it into the PS5 โ€” which also won't work with the Digital Edition of the system โ€” and then go down into the game hub area to find the upgrade option there.

From the hub, you'll be able to download the PS5 version of MK11 though you'll need to insert the disc still every time you want to play it.

Digital version buyers will need to search for the game in the PlayStation Store and locate the page for the PS5 version which should contain an upgrade option to select and download straight away.

A step-by-step guide for both situations can be found on this PlayStation Support page.

These processes should be the same for most games that will offer free upgrades as well.

The upgraded experience for Mortal Kombat 11 for next gen is said to offer 4K dynamic resolution, enhanced visuals, improved loading times thanks to the high-speed SSDs and cross-generation play.

Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate also includes cross platform play between the PlayStation and Xbox ecosystems as a whole though that won't include those on PC or the Nintendo Switch.

The new Ultimate update releases on November 17 and launches alongside Kombat Pack 2 which will include Mileena, Rain and John Rambo as new DLC fighters.

As for the next gen consoles, the Xbox Series X|S launches November 10 followed by the PS5 on Nov. 12 for some countries followed by a global release a week later.
