Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate cross platform play will only include PlayStation and Xbox versions

PC and Switch players will still be off by themselves

NetherRealm Studios finally delivered on their promise to showcase what's coming next to Mortal Kombat 11 with the Ultimate update and Kombat Pack 2 featuring Mileena, Rain and Rambo though it also produced some confusion and questions too.

One big thing that caught fans' attention at the end of the trailer was the listing of crossplay and cross-gen which had some hopeful that the developers had expanded the ability to play against any version of MK11. That's not the case, however.

The support page for Mortal Kombat's Krossplay has now been updated with Ultimate's inclusions which confirms the mode will only be available to players on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. PC, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia users will not have the option.

"Krossplay is currently supported for PS4 and Xbox One," reads the expanded FAQ page. "PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support will be available on Nov. 17, in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate release."

Mortal Kombat's first venture to allow players across rival platforms to face each other online launched in beta form in December 2019 with pretty the same functionality carrying forward for the next-gen release too.

While krossplay opponents will not appear in ranked mode, they will pop up in the Kasual Versus mode along with designated Krossplay Online Rooms though there's still no way to send invites to players on a different console.

Those jumping on the next gen train will see all of their unlocks and progression carry over from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to the Series systems though you can't take your save, purchases or anything between the platforms — so nothing will carry over if you go from PS4 to the Xbox Series X for example.

It's ultimately not too surprising that Krossplay will not be expanding beyond next gen at this time since NetherRealm doesn't directly work on the PC and Switch ports of MK11, and those versions have also lagged behind in updates in the past.

The inclusion of next gen Krossplay and cross-gen play will be available when Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate launches on November 17 along with the 3 new DLC fighters.

Cross platform play in fighting games is a more recent push from developers and the community alike to give titles a larger combined player pool to battle against with other notable inclusions from recent years like Street Fighter 5, Killer Instinct, Brawlhalla, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid and Fantasy Strike.

Players who already own a copy of MK11 on PS4 or Xbox one will be able to upgrade to the next gen versions for free, so there will be at least one updated and shinier fighting game for us to play shortly after the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Seris X|S.
