There's quite a few references to the older games

Friendships were first added to the Mortal Kombat series in MK2 as a funny complement to the Fatality finishers that garnered the game so much attention during the early '90s, and now they've finally returned on modern systems when the Aftermath expansion released earlier this year.

Series co-creator Ed Boon recently decided to let fans in on some of the behind-the-scenes fun at NetherRealm Studios by releasing a video with Wired where he breaks down every Friendship in Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate — including Rain, Mileena and Rambo.

Starting things off in alphabetical order, Boon explains that Baraka's Friendship is actually something of a redo of his original one from Mortal Kombat 2 where he simply handed over a present. Now the Tarkatan pulls out a cake and slices it up which the animators certainly had some fun with.

Mileena's is one of the newest in MK11 but also probably one of the best with the bear tea party representing herself, Kitana and Jade. What the creative director focuses in on, however, is all of the small details that helps bring it all together with Mileena adjusting her bear, pouring tea, clapping and trying to catch the falling bear gives everything just a bit more life.

Boon laments that he wishes they could have done something similar with the male ninjas in the game though he's pretty ecstatic with how hers turned out in the end.

There's 37 characters to get through, so you can check out the full video of insights, design choices and callbacks for every Friendship below where he describes that usually the dumber and sillier they are, the more likely they are to make it into the game.
