Granblue Fantasy: Versus matches BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle's 2-year sales in only 9 months

That's an extra 100,000 copies since April

Granblue Fantasy: Versus got dealt a pretty bad hand this year considering it released just before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered all offline events including the title's eSports world tour, but despite all of that, Cygames' first foray into fighting games still seems to be doing pretty well for itself in Season 2.

The publisher announced this week that Granblue Versus has now crossed over 450,000 copies sold worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC after nine months since its initial Asian release.

This means that the Granblue spin-off sold approximately 100,000 more copies since April which may not sound super impressive on paper, but it's not too surprising since Versus saw no new content updates from Zooey's release this spring until Season 2's launch in September.

It's not the perfect comparison to make, but the last big Arc System Works-developed fighting game to release with BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle reached the 450,000 mark after two years on the market with the crossover appeal of other series like Persona, RWBY, Under Night In-Birth and Senran Kagura in the mix.

Well over half of these sales likely come from just Japan, as they previously announced back in March that GBVS had sold over 200,000 copies in the country alone which does make sense considering the main Granblue Fantasy mobile/browser game has never officially released in the West as of yet.

Granblue Versus actually managed to outsell Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ and pretty much every modern modern fighting game that's not Super Smash Bros. in its opening week in Japan too.

The game still has plenty of support coming too. Belial, Cagliostro and the Season 2 update have already been released this fall, but we still have Yuel coming next month plus three more new characters in 2021.

It's nice to see the game trucking along despite its setbacks though here's to hopefully a better chance at a wider competitive scene going into next year.
