The Game Awards best fighting game nominees revealed though there's no love outside of their own category

The Game Awards have been quite good to fighting games in the past with best game, player and event nominations on top of big announcements for titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 11, so this year may be another must-see for fans of the genre.

Geoff Keighley and his crew announced the nominations for the 2020 Game Awards next month including the best fighting game category which technically only contains two brand new titles along with expansions for consideration.

The nominees for best fighting game are as follows: Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate, Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r].

This is actually the second year in a row that MK11 is nominated though it did lose out in 2019 to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Samurai Shodown, Dead or Alive 6 and Jump Force also in consideration.

Unlike some previous years, however, no fighting game appears outside of that category, nor does any player, event, commentator or eSports team unfortunately.

While there are generally great nominations all around, it's fairly sad to see Granblue miss the cut for best art direction and soundtrack compared to some of the others.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part 2, Hades, and Doom Eternal are the most nominated of the expansive list in multiple categories with all of them together in Game of the Year alongside Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The Game Awards is scheduled to take place December 10 at 4 p.m. PT with promises of big world premiere reveals as always on top of the award show.

There's no guarantee that we'll receive new fighting game announcements there, but 2018 did give us both Joker's reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 11's surprise unveiling followed by DC's Joker getting his first teaser last year.

Perhaps we'll get to see the third DLC character for Smash Ultimate's Fighter Pass Volume 2.

Players can vote for their favorite games of 2020 on The Game Awards website.
