Could a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveal be waiting at The Game Awards 2020 on December 10?

Will the ceremony be a repeat of 2018 or 2019 for Smash fans? Could go either way

We're now approaching the end of 2020. While many events have been canceled throughout 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Geoff Keighley still intends to host The Game Awards 2020 on December 10.

In response to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, this year's The Game Awards ceremony will be a virtual event with minimal attendees. Could there be a reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate waiting for fans at the yearly event?

It was suspected that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's December 7, 2018 release date would steal some of The Game Award 2018's thunder since the program was airing on December 6, 2018. Reggie Fils-Aimé, the president of Nintendo of America before retirement, promised "to do something special on [the] show."

Just before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released, it was announced that Joker would be the first character to join the roster via the first Fighters Pass and second overall DLC character after the Piranha Plant.

Reggie Fils-Aimé then approached the The Game Awards 2020 stage and spoke about the next four characters that would be joining via the first Fighters Pass. "These are going to be characters that are new to the series, just like Joker from Persona 5, characters you would not expect to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate," said Fils-Aimé.

At the time, fans were given the impression that the entirety of the Fighters Pass would consist of third party reps. This mostly ended up being true, but the final character from the Fighters Pass was Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses — a Nintendo owned intellectual property.

Leading up to The Game Awards 2019 ceremony, there were no hints that there'd be a reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Despite this, fans had reason to speculate that this could still happen since 2018's show revealed Persona 5's Joker for Smash. Needless to say, some Smash fans felt let down when the show concluded without a Smash announcement.

This eventually prompted Geoff Keighley to respond on Twitter about the disappointment that followed. While Keighley noted that it was up to Nintendo to schedule the announcement, he agreed that it would've been cool if there was a Smash reveal at The Game Awards 2019.

As such, there's really no guarantee that anything related to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is waiting to be unveiled at The Game Awards 2020. There haven't been any direct statements from Nintendo about The Game Awards 2020 similar to what was said by Reggie Fils-Aimé back in 2018.

Having said that, rumors have surfaced about a Zoom call that went on between Geoff Keighley and Donald Mustard, Epic Games creative director involved with Fortnite. According to someone who claims to have been in the Zoom call, there will be a Fortnite announcement during The Game Awards on December 10.

When asked directly about the possibility of Fortnite content in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mustard simply declared that he'd be making "no comment" about that. This is eerily similar to how Goichi "Suda51" Suda suddenly went tightlipped about Travis Touchdown getting into Smash when pressed. Shortly before this event, Travis Touchdown was announced... as a Mii costume.

It's also worth mentioning that the 27 year anniversary for the Doom series is happening on December 10, 2020, the same day as The Game Awards 2020. To this day, the Smash community is still unsure about the validity of that "leaked footage" of the Cacodemon and Mallow Mii costumes. Perhaps Nintendo is saving the Cacodemon costume for the supposed Doom Guy reveal?

Notably, December 10, 2020 will be the 70th day after Minecraft's Steve was announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There was a 158 day wait between the announcements of Byleth and Min Min, and then a 101 day wait between Min Min's reveal and Steve.

Considering the close proximity to the December holidays, December 10, 2020 seems like it might be a good time for a big reveal. Of course, it's important to temper expectations while hoping for this possibility. Remember that nothing official has been declared at this time.
