Update: The community has spoken! With more than 1,600 votes cast and plenty of great candidates to chose from, Tekken 7 has been crowned as the fighting game of the generation by all of you, the readers of EventHubs. You can check out the final poll numbers in the original story below and see how close some of the rankings are.

It's kinda hard to believe, but the next generation of consoles is no longer on the horizon. The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be here in just a few short days.

Though many players will be looking forward with what's about to come, it's also a great time to reflect on the fighting games that defined the eighth generation these past seven years from Killer Instinct to Granblue Fantasy: Versus.

We've put together a poll where all of you can vote on which title you feel is worthy of the title fighting game of the generation, and there's quite a few to choose from. Let's go over a few notable choices.

Starting things out with the pace setter, Killer Instinct was the first real foray into the realm of next gen as a launch title for the Xbox One. Though it was likely held back by its exclusivity, KI's revival set the stage for things to come with changes and innovations that would be staples of the genre going forward.

The seasonal approach we see now across all major modern fighters essentially started with KI adding new characters, systems and balance changes while also experimenting with free-to-play options and strong focus on online play.

Guilty Gear Xrd came the following year and completely flipped the script and set a new bar for what fighting games could look like with 3D models given the appearance of 2D animation. This milestone would help propel Arc System Works to new heights with their future releases like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Granblue Fantasy: Versus.

Speaking of Dragon Ball FighterZ, that game built bridges in the FGC with different communities all finding something to love which drove ridiculous numbers in its first year where we'd commonly see Super Smash Bros. players on stage next to Street Fighter players.

We can't have any talk about fighting game legacy without talking about the series that popularized the genre.

Street Fighter 5 had a bumpy start to say the least, but the game provided the most expansive eSports initiative to date within our circle, allowing top players to truly make a living out of fighting games and changing many lives through the Capcom Pro Tour.

Tekken 7 was something of the comeback kid after Tag Tournament 2 and Revolution failed to reach the lofty standards of the series, and we've now reached a point where the competitive community just seems to only keep growing as we quickly approach the game's fourth year of new content.

There is an argument to be made whether Super Smash Bros. Ultimate should count for this generation, but it's simply impossible to ignore.

Smash Ultimate encapsulates video game history and is the celebration many fans were hopeful for bringing in all previous characters plus many of the most requested fighters from the past two decades.

It's no surprise that Smash Ultimate is now the best selling fighting game of all time after dethroning Street Fighter 2.

What fighting game of the generation means to you is up for your own interpretation. Whether it be innovations, communities, online, or tournaments, let us know what you think is the defining title before we pack away our PS4s and Xbox Ones.
