Kage without fireballs has no options in the neutral

Earlier this year, RB|Daigo Umehara declared that he intended to practice Kage more seriously in Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition. Notably, Daigo expressed his belief that there is room for Kage to develop in the Season 5 meta.

FGC Translated recently uploaded a video that had Daigo discussing Kage's weaknesses. He notes that opponents need to take advantage of these faults in order to defeat solid Kage users.

"I think the weak point for Kage is that he has some really bad match ups," declared Daigo. Ideally, every character in a balanced fighting game should have their fair share of bad match ups.

Of course, Daigo seemed to be emphasizing that some of Kage's bad match ups were particularly bad. Against these characters, we'll likely see Daigo stick to using Guile during tournament play.

"I think the worst match up for Kage is Abigail," stated Daigo. "Blanka is also pretty annoying. Birdie is another one of them, I guess."

Daigo would then proceed to mention a few more bad match ups for Kage. "Zangief is not that bad, but I think the match up might still be in Zangief's favor. Chun-Li is another bad match up for Kage."

Previously, Daigo mentioned that Kage tends to struggle in match ups where it's difficult to throw red fireballs. It's possible that these particular combatants are armed with tools that counter Kage's main zoning tool.

Although Daigo has been adamant that Guile outperforms Kage, he recently pondered if Kage might be the better option against a certain fighter.

"Match ups where Kage performs better than Guile? As far as I played today, I felt like Kage might do better against G," stated Daigo.

In the video, Daigo also noted Kage's weakness in the neutral. Kage tends to perform better in close combat scenarios. Characters with anti-projectile tools tend to make Kage's struggle in the neutral even worse.
