Daigo taunts the EVO 2019 champ by threatening to pick Ryu in Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition but never does

Street Fighter 5's aggressive meta throughout the seasons have not been kind to Ryu. Outside of Season 1, the iconic Shoto hasn't really had a major impact on the tournament scene. It's no wonder that RB|Daigo Umehara has been playing Guile since Season 2.

While practicing against the EVO 2019 champion, RB|Bonchan, Daigo decided to get cheeky with some fun trash talk. Funnily enough, Daigo threatened to pull out Ryu since his Guile was consistently taking games from Bonchan.

"Well, should I pick Ryu for you?" taunted a grinning Daigo. "I kind of feel bad for you."

"No. Don't use Ryu," responded Bonchan. "No. I'm happy. I was hungry for defeat. I'm a little bit happy because I can't win."

This exchange seems to imply that Ryu is a character that you pick in Street Fighter 5 when you intend to lose. Despite Capcom's attempts to buff Ryu's toolkit, the character still resides near the bottom of most tier lists.

After another win, Daigo resumed the previous discussion about picking Ryu. "Should I warm up my Ryu? I feel like playing Ryu," stated Daigo. "I want to play the character of my love."

While this was clearly all in good fun on the part of Daigo, it's still amusing to see Street Fighter's Ryu as the butt of a joke in 2020. Sometimes it feels like Ryu has become the Dan Hibiki of Street Fighter 5.
