How did we miss this amazing Darkstalkers Easter egg in Resident Evil Resistance?

Admittedly, I have not yet played the Resident Evil 3 remake, nor have I hopped into Resident Evil Resistance. Personally, I tend to wait for these kinds of games to go down in price before picking them up and jumping in โ€” don't judge me.

It seems that in this case, however, I should have picked up the game at launch because I missed out on an incredible Easter egg found in Resistance. A video from Just Add Monsters that was uploaded last month shows a really cool Darkstalkers reference in one of the game's stages that is pretty hard to miss once you're in the fray.

This Easter egg was actually brought to our attention by VesperArcade who recently released a video in which they speculate on what Capcom's next fighting game might be.

In the Abandoned Park Ride stage on the second level, one of the amusement park scenes that players will come across is a Frankenstein's laboratory setting. You'll find a big stage, and on it very prominently can be seen a massive model of Victor, the Frankenstein's monster from Darkstalkers.

This character model is extremely detailed, appearing as a fully fleshed out asset. From the leather he's wearing to his toned muscles, Victor looks like a complete in-game model here.

Due to the RE Engine โ€” the graphics engine Capcom has been using for some of their major titles in recent times โ€” re-using assets across different games, there's a bit of speculation going around that this Victor model might be more significant than it appears. It's possible that Victor is either an asset from an upcoming project that was placed into Resident Evil Resistance to match the theme or, as JAM points out, might be a model left over from a title that was in development but ultimately got scrapped.

It's also entirely possible that the artists just had a little bit of fun here, as they needed a Frankenstein's monster character for this portion of the ride and opted to give a little nod to the classic Capcom fighting game series.

Further into the level, there are a couple of other things that could be seen as more Darkstalkers references.

In one scene you'll walk into a foggy London setting that features Jack the Ripper on the prowl. One particular spot shows a police officer shining a light up at a window, where a silhouette of Jack is seen standing behind a woman.

What's weird, though, is the silhouette actually looks more like Demitri from Darkstalkers than it does the models of Jack the Ripper that are visible in Resistance. The cape has a collar pointing upward, like Demitri's, and it even has a pointy head that resembles the vampire's hairdo.

Lastly, you'll come across gargoyle statues that are positioned very similarly to a popular piece of Morrigan artwork. It could simply be coincidence, but given the clear Easter eggs that are found in this game, it wouldn't be surprising if this was also an intentional design decision.

Whether these Easter eggs are merely nods to a past franchise or hints at something more is obviously up to interpretation. At the end of the day, it's a real treat to see Darkstalkers getting some love here in 2020, and man, does that Victor model look incredible.
