Street Fighter 5 is now Capcom's 10th best selling title ever
Crosses the 4.5 million sales mark
Street Fighter 5's rocky launch in 2016 will likely never be forgotten by players and the community, but the game has continued a strong and steady approach over these past four years to bring people in.
Capcom has updated their Platinum Titles page to include sales numbers for their top games of all time through the end of March 2020 where it was revealed Street Fighter 5 is now the company's 10th best selling single release of all time.
Street Fighter 5's lifetime sales numbers have now reached 4.5 million copies which is up 400,000 copies in three months following the end of 2019.
Capcom's flagship fighting game had been on pace to sell on average around 200,000 units per quarter last year, so doubling that in one go is quite the feat for a game that's over four years old at this point.
The largest contributing factor to those increased sales numbers likely comes from the release of the Champion Edition expansion which added in Gill and Seth as playable characters along with packing in pretty much all available content released over four seasons.
This keeps SF5 as Capcom's second-best selling fighting game release behind just the original Street Fighter 2 on SNES though there are some caveats to these feats.
Capcom combines all of SF5's sales between the base game, Arcade Edition and now Champion Edition all under one entry where as before the company broke up spots for updated releases and even SKUs through today with re-releases in the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry franchises.
While Street Fighter 5 may have sold more than vanilla SF4, combining those numbers with Super, Arcade Edition and Ultra's sales numbers brings its total to more than 8 million games. Plus, any fighting game will need to make it quite a ways to catch up to Street Fighter 2.
In other updated sales, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection managed to sell around 100,000 copies in the last quarter to bring its total to 1.2 million though Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite remains at 1.4 million.
The boost in numbers has increased Street Fighter as a franchise's total figures to 44 million games sold while Marvel vs. Capcom is currently hovering at 9.4 million.
For the other recent Capcom releases currently beating out SF5, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is the newest addition at 5.2 million in just six months along with Resident Evil 2's remake, RE7 and of course Monster Hunter: World on top of it all.
It'll be interesting to keep of these numbers going forward with the current global pandemic shutting down many aspects of normal life including halting offline fighting game events for the foreseeable future.
Last night, Capcom announced their plans to move the Capcom Pro Tour for 2020 entirely online, so the publisher is still looking to push their main eSports title during these times.
