EVO online could be coming back in the future if fans are 'really excited and engaged' says Mr. Wizard

Traditional EVO in Las Vegas still here to stay for foreseeable future

The biggest fighting game stage in the world is taking a necessary respite away from the traditional event centers in Las Vegas and making its home online this year thanks to complications from COVID-19, but this very well may not be the online time we see EVO go online, according to head tournament organizer, Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar.

EVO's big boss took to Twitter this week to state that if fans show enough interest to this year's somewhat obligated experiment, network play could become a more regular part of the EVO experience in the future even after restrictions on social interactions have been lifted.

"[I]f the fans are really excited and engaged by Evo online, we could possibly add it to our event roster in the future," Cuellar stated on Thursday. Calls for clarification quickly followed as FGC members like Chris Mastey wondered if this would imply replacing the more traditional "EVO Worlds," as it's now being called, with online play.

Cuellar further clarified that any online facets of the event would exist in addition to the event proper with the message, "EVO Worlds in Vegas during the summer is here to stay for the foreseeable future!"

News of the cancellation of EVO Worlds 2020 surfaced back on May 1, but it wasn't until May 14 organizers released details on which titles would be played and how.

The community has had mixed reactions to this as it considers the benefits of expanded opportunity weighed against the increased levels of unpredictability that playing over the internet with today's fighting game netcodes implies.
