Ed Boon: I've never seriously said that I don't want to see Mileena come back to Mortal Kombat
Game developers just like to tease the fans
"You will never see Mileena in one of our games ever again. Ever," once said Ed Boon in a Tweet that responded to a request for NetherRealm Studios to add Mileena to Mortal Kombat 11. Considering the date, it was clear that this statement was intended to be a humorous April Fools' joke played for laughs.
Unfortunately for Mileena fans, the only new characters that became playable with Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath were Sheeva, Fujin, and RoboCop. Mileena is still nowhere to be found on Mortal Kombat 11's character select screen.
This isn't to say that NetherRealm Studios has completely forgotten about Mileena. While this isn't quite what Mileena enthusiasts were hoping for, she makes a cameo appearance during Kitana's Friendship.
In a recent interview with Daily Star, Ed Boon clarified that he's only been teasing on Twitter with regards to never wanting to see Mileena in another Mortal Kombat game.
"Actually, I've never seriously said that I don't want to see Mileena come back to Mortal Kombat," stated Boon. "Most of the time I am just teasing the fanatics who demand she be added 100 times a day."
Needless to say, Boon is often bombarded by character requests on Twitter on a daily basis. There are plenty of fan favorites like Reptile and Ermac who have mysteriously been missing from the action.
"I love to have fun with that," continued Boon. "Mortal Kombat has about 80 characters in its roster now. So, we tend to look back and occasionally revive a character who hasn't been seen in a long time, like we did with Fujin in Aftermath."
Sheeva is a character that hasn't been playable in the Mortal Kombat series since Mortal Kombat 9. Although Fujin made a cameo appearance during Mortal Kombat X's story mode, he actually hasn't been used since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
"We do take into account the story because some characters existed in different parts of the timeline so we need to stay somewhat consistent with the narrative that we are telling," said Boon. "But move sets and 'cool factor' also play a big part in which character we decide to bring back."
While Aftermath in some ways feels like the "Komplete Edition" for Mortal Kombat 11, rumors have circulated from a data miner that Kombat Pack 3 might be currently in development. Of course, Ed Boon also recently mentioned that NetherRealm Studios has something else in the works that isn't related to Mortal Kombat or Injustice.
Regardless, it does sound like we'll someday see Mileena again whether that comes from another Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 11 or a future sequel.
