Capcom says no new DRM is planned for Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition at this time

The Steam listing does not reflect changes made to the product itself

Street Fighter 5 players recently became worried when it was discovered that the game may soon be adding new Digital Rights Management (DRM) tools which would restrict what they could do with the game on PC, but that doesn't actually appear to be the case after all.

Capcom has now released a statement that clarifies there are no plans to implement new DRM software in Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition.

"DRM descriptors have been added to the Street Fighter V product page on Steam, but no new DRM systems were implemented at this time," a Capcom representative told EventHubs. "This is an update to the store page only, but not to the product itself, as a DRM system has already been in place."

What this ultimately seems to mean for the state of Street Fighter 5 is that nothing is actually changing within the game itself, so mods that work now should continue to work as they had in the past without extra DRM trying to weigh it down.

Costumes, stages and the hitbox viewer tool from Frame Trapped should all be fine considering Capcom said SF5 already had the DRM implemented before.

It's easy to see why PC players and especially modders would be worried about new security tools added to the fighting game at this point in its life cycle though it seems the application has been there already for quite some time — likely years.

"DRM descriptors have been added to the Street Fighter V product page on Steam, but no new DRM systems were implemented at this time. This is an update to the store page only, but not to the product itself, as a DRM system has already been in place."

The vast majority of video games that launch with DRM to stop piracy, hackers and cheaters come on day one to try and benefit the title during the time where its set to make its most sales.

Capcom is no stranger to using DRM in their PC versions of games considering Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Monster Hunter: World, Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5 have all released with Denuvo in their systems though the developer often times goes back and removes it after the title's been available for around a year.

Street Fighter 5 will be seeing something of a new update in around a week, however, as the developers will be adding the Ring of Prosperity and iDom's Champion's Choice Laura costume to the game on July 29.

There's also still five more DLC characters plus three stages on the way for SF5 though there's been little word on where or when to expect an announcement on that front.
