Byleth's inclusion potentially opens the way for first party Nintendo reps in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass Volume 2

Although Joker, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, Terry Bogard, and the recently announced Byleth are all packaged as part of the first Fighters Pass, one of these challengers is clearly not like the others. More specifically, Byleth is the only character that's part of this pass that's a first party Nintendo rep. All the others are from third parties.

Up until this point, there was this perception that all the Fighters Pass DLC would represent third party franchises. This was mostly due to a statement made by the then president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, back when Joker was unveiled.

"These are going to be characters that are new to the series, just like Joker from Persona 5, characters you would not expect to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate," declared Fils-Aime regarding the Fighters Pass selections.

This theory seemed to hold up as Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, and Terry Bogard were revealed. It sure would be weird if the final challenger was the only Nintendo rep for the first Fighters Pass, wouldn't it?

Because of this, rumors that suggested fighters like Ryu Hayabusa, Dante, and Lloyd Irving as the next combatant were fairly believable. Despite this, we ended up getting Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Going forward, we'll have to consider Nintendo's first party franchises during our speculation. This means that characters like Dixie Kong, Captain Toad, and even... Waluigi are back on the table.

The Fighters Pass volume 2 will eventually release six new challengers to the game's already impressive 80 character roster. It will be an interesting two years as it's estimated that all six challengers will be released by December 31, 2021.
