Byleth was recently revealed to be the Fighters Pass' final challenger for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (don't forget about the Fighters Pass Vol. 2's six incoming characters). Seeing as how Byleth's inclusion means that we now have eight Fire Emblem characters in the game, their announcement hasn't exactly been the most popular among fans.

If we rewind backwards a few months, we can actually see signs of Byleth's popularity in Japan. According to a certain Reddit thread, Byleth received numerous requests from Japanese player tweets following the Terry Bogard reveal.

Although this only represents a small sample size and probably didn't involve the most scientific method of gathering information on character popularity, it was ultimately determined that Byleth was the fifth most popular request from Japan.

Essentially, Reddit user Zelcf compiled data regarding character requests via comments to Nintendo tweets and constructed three separate lists. With this information, we were able to gauge which fighters were sought-after in the regions of the United States, Europe, and Japan.

It appeared that Sora was overall the number one pick. He ranked at the very top of the lists for America and Europe. Sora also managed to come in second place for Japan.

As far as just Japan is concerned, the only characters that appeared to be more popular than Byleth were Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Monster Hunter from Monster Hunter. Notably, Fire Emblem: Three Houses' Byleth did not appear at all in the top 10 for America or Europe.

Needless to say, it appears that Byleth may have been a less controversial choice for Japan. The ratio of dislikes to total ratings is smaller for the Japanese trailer for Byleth compared to the English version.

In total, the English trailer for the character announcement received over 134,000 likes and 77,000 dislikes. This seems to indicate that roughly 36-37% of the English speaking audience didn't care for Byleth's inclusion.

Meanwhile, the Japanese version received over 21,000 likes and 4,600 dislikes. The ratio this time was between 17 and 19%.

While it's obviously true that English speakers are able to upvote and downvote on the Japanese trailer and vice versa, this seems to suggest that the Japanese fans were overall more accepting of Byleth even though he (or she) is the eighth Fire Emblem rep to join the roster.
