Mortal Kombat 11 was the 5th best-selling game of 2019 in the US with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also cracking the top 10

None can stop the reign of Call of Duty though

While it may be hard to believe, we only first saw the reveal of Mortal Kombat 11 one year ago considering how much of an impact its had in such a short amount of time on the market.

NetherRealm Studios' latest fighting game dominated the North American market for the first handful of months following its release, and it apparently finished strong as well.

Mortal Kombat 11 finished 2019 as the 5th best-selling title in the United States despite not charting in December itself according to the NPD Group's latest numbers, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also managed to crack the top 10 even though it came out the previous year.

Only the sales juggernauts of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, NBA 2K20, Madden NFL 20 and Borderlands 3 managed to beat out a fighting game though it is worth pointing out that all of those titles did come out in the latter half of 2019 as well.

Warner Bros. has not really given us an update on what MK11's sales numbers are now, but we do know that it's the second-best selling fighting game of the console generation on PS4 (and probably Xbox One now too) in the west being only behind its predecessor, Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat 11 is also the second best-selling in the entire franchise now next to MKX, which we do know managed to sell over 11 million units during its lifespan.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, on the other hand, finished the year ranked number seven on the NPD charts as one of only two Nintendo exclusives on the list — the other being Mario Kart 8.

The massive crossover title managed to become the most successful home console fighting game release of all time last year after being available for less than a year — beating out the likes of Street Fighter 2.

No fighting game, however, managed to cross the top 10 of the decade which isn't too surprising given that the list is made up almost entirely of Call of Duty games and Minecraft.

Unsurprisingly having pushed over 106 million units to market, the PlayStation 4 is the best-selling gaming hardware of the previous decade in the U.S. though the Nintendo Switch did manage to beat it out in 2019 to be the top console of the year here.

We can also see that if we split up the sales by console, MK11 was actually number four overall for PS4 and seventh for Xbox One while Smash was the top-seller for the Switch last year even beating out Pokemon Sword.

"Exactly 1 year after our Mortal Kombat 11 "The Reveal" event, the NPD group published its top selling games of 2019," said Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon of the news. "We are BLOWN AWAY at the support MK fans have given this game. #5 selling game of 2019. On behalf of EVERYONE who worked on this game... Thank you!"
