Newly revealed Joker sequence in Mortal Kombat 11 is a direct reference to Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight

While we can't say we're too surprised to see that Mortal Kombat 11 Joker is jam-packed with references to his ocean of past appearances, we can say we're very happy that NetherRealm Studios included this one.

We're getting bits and pieces of the big picture as sneak peeks and yesterday's gameplay trailer show us more of MK11's upcoming DLC character. What looks to be a victory sequence also looks to be a callback to Heath Ledger's iconic representation of the character back in 2008's The Dark Knight.

Shared by the official MK11 Twitter on Friday afternoon, this 10-second clip sees Batman's nemesis walking away from a defeated foe and tampering with a detonator.

Given that the pairing of comedy and chaotic destruction is one of Joker's go-to modus operandi, (we wouldn't be at all surprised if you told us this same sequence had been done before Ledger) it would almost seem like a mistake to not include this classic.

Though we've seen the comic book villain in a handful of fighting games before this, the freedom that comes from him being in an M-rated title is particularly exciting, especially since we know he's in the very capable, Easter egg loving hands of NRS.

Joker will be available in Mortal Kombat 11 to Kombat Pack holders on January 28, and available to the rest of the world just one week thereafter.
