Today during Nintendo's livestream, Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Byleth from the Fire Emblem franchise will be the next DLC character to arrive for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this winter.

Byleth is the main protagonist of the latest Fire Emblem: Three Houses title on the Nintendo Switch with both the male and female versions available to play as along with four different weapons to use in battle.

The dual fighter wields a sword as per usual with the Fire Emblem Smash cast along with Marth, Roy, Chrom and the like though Byleth will also be able to take advantage of the whole weapon system including an ax, lance / naginata and a bow.

Byleth serves as an instructor in Three Houses, and so they have a large repertoire of moves to use in battle.

Sakurai describes the new fighters as a "distance demon" seeming to mean that they're great at the mid-range game though they can struggle in the aspects of mobility and speed.

Sword of the Creator is essentially Byleth's default / primary weapon used in their jabs, flurries, up special, tilts and up smash where it can also transform to become something of a whip sword like you'd see with Ivy from the Soul Calibur series.

Areadbhar can be used with the side smash and side special as a large spear / naginata that has a ton of range though it's not exactly the fastest thing around. Side special has great coverage in the air taking up a wide area around the hero. This weapon also has a sweet spot on the tip like Marth.

Aymr is a heavy ax on the down special and smash which means that they're only the second Fire Emblem fighter not to have a counter on their down B. Byleth's new down special works similarly to Captain Falcon's Falcon Punch though it has super armor that can power through even the F-Zero star's signature attack.

Finally, there's the Failnaught bow which is only really used in the neutral special and nair attacks. It seems to work a bit similarly to Link's in a way, but when this bow is completely charged, it'll glow yellow and shoot out an especially strong bolt that deals massive damage and knock back.

Ruptured Heaven serves as Byleth's Final Smash where they team up with the mysterious character Sothis to perform a powerful and magical strike... and may or may not contain some mild spoilers for the game it's from.

For the new stage, Garreg Mach Monastery is fairly unique, as it will cycle through four different locations during battle with different sizes and attributes. These areas from Three Houses includes the marketplace reception hall, bridge and cathedral.

Byleth and their heroes' relics will release later this month on January 28 for Fighter Pass owners alongside some spiffy new Mii Fighter costumes including Mega Man X, Mega Man.exe, Altair from Assassin's Creed, Cuphead and Ubisoft's Rabbids.
