The internet believes Sakurai's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate livestream promotional image is hinting at the identity of the next DLC character

I can't bend my pinky like that

Fans have been waiting since Terry Bogard's release in November to learn who exactly will be the fifth and final member of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's first Fighter Pass which we'll learn more about in two days since Nintendo announced they'll be showing off the mystery fighter in full this Thursday, January 16.

As per usual, Smash Director Masahiro Sakurai will be hosting the livestream though the odd pose he makes in the reveal's teaser image has set the internet ablaze trying to figure out what it could mean with many hypotheses coming forward.

If you were simply scrolling past the image, you may believe that Sakurai was simply holding up the peace sign though that's not the case at all. He's actually holding up three fingers while his thumb and pinky finger are curled downwards together.

It's a pretty awkward pose to try and replicate considering even though i think of myself being fairly flexible, I cannot perform that naturally at all without grabbing and moving my fingers around.

Sakurai isn't typically one known for teasing too much, yet the internet is trying to find the deeper meaning behind his raised elbow and fingers while coming up with some actually somewhat logical responses.

Out of all of the guesses, there's some goofier ones like thinking it's tied to Crash Bandicoot, Rayman or even Agumon from Digimon because they all have three fingers though there's a different one that caught my eye a bit.

Twitter User Pikatato shows that the way Sakurai's thumb and pinky are bent make his hand look like a heart while the fingers represent numbers. They take this as a possible hint of a connection to Kingdom Hearts and Sora's long-requested inclusion.

There's also another character with a third mainline sequel coming out tied to Nintendo hardware which is Travis Touchdown from the No More Heroes series although the most popularly discussed choice is neitehr of those.

Dante's possible inclusion from the Devil May Cry series has sparked a bit of a fervor online with many believing that the demon hunter will be coming next following some potential hints from other sources including Capcom themselves.

The three fingers they postulate could also tie into DMC3's upcoming release on the Nintendo Switch next month — when character 5 will very likely launch.

Thinking if the raised elbow could have any connection to the Devil May Cry series, all I could come up with was the logo for DMC4 which features Nero instead of Dante and also has a very different elbow / hand pose.

Other suggestions from fans include things like a Fire Emblem: Three Houses representative, Knuckles from Sonic, the trio of Chorus Kids or perhaps even Waluigi because the finger pose looks similar to Wario's 'W' pose.

Does Sakurai's pose actually have a meaning behind it, or are we all looking too hard into every move he and Nintendo do in regards to Smash? It'll be a long wait, but we should be finding out what is going on in less than two days.
