Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the most downloaded game on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 that wasn't Fortnite

Dragon Ball FighterZ and Mortal Kombat 11 also manage to crack the list

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's sales numbers have been historic considering it became the best-selling fighting game ever in less than a year though this newest statistic is still fairly surprising.

Nintendo recently released a list of the top 25 most downloaded games on the Switch in North America in 2019 where Smash Ultimate finished in second place only behind the free-to-play phenomenon of Fortnite.

While that may not be so surprising to some considering Ultimate is the Switch's second best-selling title overall at 15.71 million copies sold as of the end of September last year, there's still some other factors we need to consider.

For one, Smash Ultimate came out in 2018 meaning that its big first month push of sales is not even counted towards this rank though the massive crossover did continue to chart highly on the NPD Group's charts throughout 2019.

Smash is the only game in the top five as well that is a full-priced retail release next to the likes of Fortnite, Minecraft, Cuphead and the Untitled Goose Game — and most of these were digital only titles.

Only three other Nintendo exclusives made the top 10 with Pokémon Sword followed by Fire Emblem: Three Houses and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Even Super Mario Maker 2 only made it up to number 12.

Fighting games also saw some surprising representation on the rest of the list as well considering Dragon Ball FighterZ, another game from 2018, was the 10th overall while Mortal Kombat 11 finished off the list at 25th.

It's quite fascinating to see that in the age of digital games markets quickly overtaking the need for physical discs, players are choosing to get their big AAA experiences without needing to go to a store or wait for a delivery.

Personally, I've shifted from something of a small-ish game collector to going almost exclusively digital this gaming generation because of the ease of having everything always ready on your systems without switching discs around — until you run out of storage space that is.

It'll remain to be seen if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be able to keep up that momentum in 2020 though it appears to have a good shot considering the game's 80th fighter will be releasing as DLC within the next month or so. Plus, the rumors of an enhanced Nintendo Switch model may also drive some additional sales.
