Liu Kang's Bicycle Kick isn't as ridiculous as it seems — real martial artists react to techniques in Street Fighter 5, Mortal Kombat 11, and Tekken 7

Our favorite fighting games revolve around battle-hardened warriors using a multitude of different attacks and techniques to knock out their opponents. Much of what we see in series like Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat is derived from actual martial arts, but how do they actually stack up to the real thing?

A new video from Gamology brings in two legitimate martial artists to react to maneuvers found in Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11, and Street Fighter 5.

Martial artists Noah Fleder and Gemma Nguyen sit down to share their thoughts and insight on several of the attacks found in the latest installments of the three major fighting game franchise. Kicking off with Mortal Kombat 11, the two experts get a closer look at Liu Kang.

One of Liu Kang's trademark special moves, the Bicycle Kick, surprises the two fighters at first due to the sheer number of kicks the character is able to toss out while in the air. After counting the kicks, Fleder realizes that both he and Liu Kang are able to land five kicks while airborne, making it not quite as ridiculous at it may seem.

Moving over to Tekken 7, it looks as though there are legitimate martial arts represented in the footage shown, but they're not always fully accurate. "I really like the way they mix different styles," says Nguyen. "The technique isn't always 100% there."

While Street Fighter 5 feels like the least realistic of the three in terms of art-style and design, it seems that Fleder and Nguyen actually think that it is the most technically accurate of the bunch. "So far, Street Fighter seems like the techniques they're using are more martial arts technical — like, technically correct," Nguyen explained.
