Iroha has one of the most risqué supers I've ever seen in a fighting game... Will SNK really try to recreate it for her in the new Samurai Shodown?

Blood and gore are still A-OK, but will 2020's social landscape be as receptive to the unstoppable force of bounce that is Iroha?

It's not like Samurai Shodown has ever shied away from showing us some quite gruesome scenes, and it'd even be accurate to call it the Mortal Kombat of the East as far as blood and gore goes — some of the old games showed heads flying and bodies dismembered at every turn.

While this violence has been somewhat toned down with the latest installment, there's definitely still a lot of blood flying around and you can get match finishes that end in some fairly crudely done dismemberment. In other words, the main reason Samurai Shodown had its mature rating to begin with has been toned down, but it's still there at its core. Now, the question is, how will SNK approach matters that aren't quite as bloody, but equally susceptible to the "mature audiences only" label?

In case you're new to the Samurai Shodown series, or even old to it and just happened to not have played Samurai Shodown VI, it's likely you don't know much about Iroha or why she has such a gigantic amount of fans, enough to secure her countless pieces of merchandise even just shortly after her creation back in 2005.

This massive fanbase was also enough to land her the 2nd spot in SNK's official poll for characters they wanted to see in the new game, just barely edged out by the bow and arrow-wielding Majikina Mina, though they were both leaps and bounds ahead of the 3rd placer Shizumaru Hisame.

Now, the obvious part for why she's such a beloved character is twofold and if you see a picture of her, it should stick out to you because SNK made sure it would.

Not only do her assets stick out, but SNK gave her one of the most suggestive super moves I've seen in any fighting game. Right below, you can have a look at it at the timestamp of 17 seconds (video courtesy of Mariano Perez.

While a screen comes down to cover our eyes from full nudity, what happens is that Iroha for no apparent reason strips naked and then beats the crap out of her opponent. Although you don't get to actually see anything, there is surprisingly little left to the imagination as she finishes her opponent off with what can only be described as a sprite artists best attempt at jiggle physics.

SNK have been varied in how faithful they've been to adapting characters' old Weapon Flip and SSM techniques in the latest Samurai Shodown, with some of them being practically 1:1 adaptions in 3D, such as Basara, while others like Galford are quite different from what they used to be, so as far as track record goes it's anyone's guess.

To be clear, I'm not knocking SNK for any of this. If you're going to have a fanservice character who was created explicitly to be the player's personal maid (this is allegedly canon, according to the SNK Wiki... she's also actually a bird who's just temporarily taken human form, for some reason) you may as well go all out with her, and they sure did.

Now, granted, Samurai Shodown is a game that's already rated M for Mature by the ESRB — at this point, they're in for a penny, in for a pound. The question isn't as much "is it okay to show a sexually suggestive super move in a game like this", but rather "do SNK have the balls to do it in today's climate?"

Given that SNK are a Japanese company (technically Chinese-owned at this point, but you know what I mean), who tend to be far more lax when it comes to fan service of this kind and more importantly the fact that they decided to bring back Iroha to begin with suggests that they're likely going to do their very damndest to recreate this old super move in 3D glory. And her fans will assuredly love it, as well they should.

Personally, I'm more of a Mina guy, but for any fans of Iroha out there, are you hoping to see her classic super rendered in glorious 3D? How angry will you be if SNK cops out and doesn't dare do it? Let us know in the comments.
