Starting out strong

Granblue Fantasy: Versus has been in the hands of players, in Asia at least, for around two days, and it's already apparently pushing very strong numbers to say the least.

Publisher Cygames revealed their new fighting game spin-off of their mobile RPG sold over 150,000 copies in its first day on the market, which is quite a big accomplishment for the genre in the region right now.

These numbers put Granblue Fantasy: Versus at more units sold than Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7 and Samurai Shodown pushed in their first full weeks in Japan though there are caveats to consider here.

Granblue's numbers include the Chinese / Asian release along with the Japanese launch, so it's not the perfect comparison โ€” but it's all we've got right now.

Street Fighter 5 in its first week in Japan on PlayStation 4 moved 42,000 copies back in 2016, Tekken 7 reached almost 59,000 units, Samurai Shodown last year essentially doubled King of Fighters 14's numbers at 40,000, and Dragon Ball FighterZ did almost 69,000 in its home territory launch. These numbers may or may not also include digital sales.

It'll be hard for pretty much any fighting game to top Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, considering the enormous crossover sold over 1.2 million in its first three days in Japan alone โ€” it now sits at 17.68 million worldwide.

This is a pretty great sign for EVO 2020's newest mainstage member though it'll be interesting to see how Granblue does on a worldwide scale considering Asia is its primary market โ€” as opposed to most modern fighting games.

The original Granblue Fantasy has been downloaded over 24 million times on mobile devices as of June 2019 even though it isn't officially available in places like North America and Europe.

Since GBVS is part of the Arc World Tour and EVO this year, the core FGC crowd will likely pay the most attention to the game which will essentially serve to function as the Granblue brand's first big push westward except for the anime series.

Outside of Asia, unless you want to import it, Granblue Fantasy: Versus will be available on March 3, 2020 for North America on PlayStation 4 though a European launch is still simply scheduled for a first quarter launch window.
