Ed Boon after being reminded about the coming Mortal Kombat 30th anniversary: We should probably try to think of something
The original Mortal Kombat debuted in the arcades back in 1992 and quickly became a hit among fans. Once 2022 rolls around, the Mortal Kombat series will officially be 30 years old.
Ed Boon was recently reminded that the 30th year anniversary was coming up during an interview that took place on the FestiGame Twitch stream. Based on Boon's reaction to the reminder, it didn't appear that NetherRealm Studios had any previous plans to celebrate this occurrence.
"Do you have something planned for the 30th year anniversary for the Mortal Kombat series?" asked the interviewer. This prompted Boon to think for a moment before responding.
"Not currently. But until you mentioned it, I wasn't really thinking too much about it," admitted Boon. "We should probably try to think of something. We didn't have anything planned, but I'm glad you brought it up."
For Mortal Kombat's 25th anniversary towards the end of 2017, Raiden was added as a playable DLC fighter in Injustice 2. Before that, Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat was also made playable in Injustice 2 though this wasn't advertised as being an anniversary celebration like with Raiden's inclusion.
The only game released by NetherRealm Studios since Injustice 2 is Mortal Kombat 11 at the moment. As briefly touched upon by Ed Boon during the interview, NetherRealm Studio is currently on their longest post-launch cycle with Mortal Kombat 11's DLC.
At one point, Boon mentioned that Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat X are among his favorite Mortal Kombat titles. He is apparently unwilling to note Mortal Kombat 11 as being one of his favorites since they are still "in it," implying that there's still more DLC to come.
If Boon is truly serious about doing something for Mortal Kombat's 30th anniversary, then it means that we might see something special for Mortal Kombat 11, an unannounced Injustice 3 or something else entirely near the end of 2022.
