Super Smash Bros. creator, Masahiro Sakurai, gave us his latest Smash Ultimate showcase today with an in-depth look at Sephiroth, the game's newest DLC character.

We already knew the Final Fantasy 7 villain would be en route some time here in December, but Sakurai clarified today that Sephiroth would be launching December 22. That said, there's actually a way you can start using him as early as today at 3 p.m. PT.

There's a special "Sephiroth Challenge" going live today at 3 p.m. PT for those who have already purchased Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Beating Sephiroth in a boss fight in this mode will immediately allow you to access him as a playable character and allow you to play on his new stage.

If you already own the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, then no additional purchase should be necessary to acquire Sephiroth. The Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is priced at $29.99. Alternatively, you can buy Seph individually for $5.99.

Purchasing the One Winged Angel comes with more than just the fighter himself as each newcomer brings with them an all new stage. The Final Fantasy-themed battleground is called "Northern Cave" and pays homage to the where the final battle in FF7 takes place. Like many stages in Smash Ultimate, Northern Cave's background changes multiple times over the course of the battle.

New Mii Fighter skins will also be available as Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and Chocobo of Final Fantasy fame will join Ultimate alongside Sephiroth. One other Mii Fighter skin, Geno from Super Mario RPG, will also be added at that same time. Each of these can be purchased for $0.75. There are also nine new themes coming, many of them new arrangements on older FF classics.

Watching and listening to Sakurai's presentation reveals that Sephiroth is a very powerful swordfighter with an exceptionally long reach. His downfall, however, seems to be in his longer recovery times and Sakurai notes multiple times that players have to be choosy with their attacks as they'll be left open to punishes otherwise.

As has been the usual with the latest Smash Ultimate characters, Sephiroth brings a fairly unique flavor as he's able to pull off some fairly interesting attacks such as his numerous projectile explosions and his various stabs. He's even able to lodge his sword into side walls to help in his recoveries.

Here are some relevant stills from today's show. You'll see his release date, a few shots of Northern Cave in its various forms, Sephiroth in action against Dracula, and the new Mii costumes:
