Injustice 2's free weekend comes at a curious time and perhaps lends more credence to an Injustice 3 reveal coming soon

What could they do with Superman in part 3?

The Injustice series is surprisingly seven years old now, and more evidence appears to be building to suggest that a new entry may soon be on the way as well.

Microsoft recently announced Injustice 2 is free to play this weekend, and its timing in relation to another DC event appears to lend further credence to speculation that an Injustice 3 reveal is on the horizon.

Between now and Sunday, August 16, at 11:59 p.m. PT, Xbox One players can download and play Injustice 2 for free along with NASCAR Heat 5 and The Elder Scrolls Online as part of their Free Play Days promotion.

This free weekend comes just one week before the big 24-hour DC Fandome event where Warner Bros. is set to showcase what's coming next for their heroes and villains in terms of comics, movies and video games.

Injustice series director Ed Boon will be one of the many presenters for DC Fandome though the only event he's listed for currently is the Inside Injustice: Making the Hit Games and Comics panel.

That panel appears to simply be a behind the scenes look at the making of the Injustice games and comics, but there is one other place during the event the new game could show up.

The Hall of Heroes main stage, which is going to show off more of the Snyder Cut of Justice League and Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game among many other reveals, currently has one event that is simply listed as "To Be Announced" and points to something that hasn't already been unveiled.

DC Fandome also comes shortly after the announcement and release of the new Injustice: Year Zero comic book line which serves as a prequel to the first game, and there has been a comic run to coincide with the release of a playable title.

Previous comics, however, had the video game name in their titles as well, so it may be something separate even if Injustice 3 is coming soon.

Looking back at the previous release schedule for NetherRealm Studios also points to an Injustice 3 or new project coming in 2021 considering they've released a new fighting game every two years since 2011's Mortal Kombat — and Mortal Kombat 11 dropped in 2019.

Development times are generally getting longer in the industry, especially with new hardware on the way with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but NRS hasn't broken that pattern in almost a decade.

This isn't the first free promotion Injustice has seen this summer either, as Warner Bros. gave away the Ultimate Edition back in June to players on PS4, Xbox One and PC seemingly out of nowhere.

While Ed Boon has said previously that NetherRealm's next project isn't Mortal Kombat or Injustice, the company was also hiring specifically for next gen projects for both series.

Of course this is far from a confirmation that Injustice 3 will show up a week from now even with the stars seemingly aligning for its return, and luckily we won't have to wait too much longer to find out.

DC Fandome will run for 24 hours on August 22 at 10 a.m. PT with special reveals, sneak peeks, creator panels, cosplay and so much more though you'll have to catch it live to take part. The full schedule for the convention-like replacement can be found here.
