The next generation of consoles is slated for its arrival this holiday season. Fans are clamoring for new details about the upcoming hardware as the launch window rapidly approaches, and slowly but surely, we're seeing fresh tidbits trickle in.

This morning, Sony took some time to answer a few questions about legacy peripherals and the PlayStation 5. Most notably to us here in the fighting game community, it has been confirmed that PlayStation 4 fightsticks will indeed work on PS5.

According to Sony, you will be able to use officially licensed arcade sticks with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. This extends to other peripherals, including racing wheels and flight controllers.

"Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games," the PlayStation Blog wrote.

It is noted that not every licensed fightstick may work on PlayStation 5. Though it'll likely be a mix and match situation, most major fighting game companies' products should be compatible here.

This compatibility also extends to the DualShock 4 and pad users. Those who prefer using a gamepad for their fighting games will be able to do so with PlayStation 4 supported titles on PlayStation 5.

The DualShock 4 will not, however, work with PlayStation 5 games, says Sony. Any next-gen fighting titles or current-gen fighters that are also seeing a PS5 release — such as Guilty Gear Strive — will not be playable with the DualShock 4.

Backward compatibility is a big selling point for the next-gen consoles, and Sony expects an "overwhelming majority" of PS4 games to be playable on PS5 at launch. With it being likely that most, if not all major current-gen fighting games will be backward compatible on PS5, it's good to know that players won't need to invest in a pricey new fightstick to start in on the action on day one.
