What a strange year 2020 is turning out to be. Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), many events within and outside the FGC are being canceled for the sake of public health.

It goes without saying that physical sports are among those that are taking a hit as a result. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a prime example of a celebrated event that is unable to take place as a gathering of too many people at one place would prove to be too risky.

According to TMZ, Dana White, president of the UFC, is incredibly close to securing a deal that would allow the organization to host matches on a private island. This is a theme that sounds far too familiar to fighting game fans...

During the first Mortal Kombat, the events of the story unfolded at Shang Tsung's island. Fighters were invited to take part in a deadly martial arts tournament that would ultimately decide the fate of Earthrealm.

Interestingly enough, the Mortal Kombat movie actually did a fairly good job of sticking to the video game's lore. Similarly, the fighting tournament took place on Shang Tsung's island. Those who were defeated had a tendency to have their souls stolen by Shang Tsung.

Likewise, the Dead or Alive movie also issued invitations to some of the world's greatest combat specialists. Once again, the entire event was actually hosted by a villain who sought to collect data on proficient battle techniques and become rich.

Needless to say, there are a lot of memes that can certainly come about if the UFC start issuing invitations to duke it out at some private island.
