That's a lot of consoles

The PlayStation 4 has been the de facto home of fighting games for this console generation, and it will go down in history as one of the most successful pieces of gaming hardware of all time.

Sony's latest financial information reveals the PS4 has crossed 102.8 million units shipped as of September 30, 2019 which makes it the second best-selling home console of all time behind the company's second foray into the market with the PS2.

This latest move bumps it just above the original PlayStation which ended its long life cycle at an impressive 102.49 million units and Nintendo's Wii which managed to push 101.6 million systems.

Nothing will probably ever top the success of the PS2 having sold a massive 155 million consoles during its time on shelves though the Nintendo DS was not far off in the handheld side dishing out 154.02 million systems for all of its iterations.

Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn't said how the Xbox One has been selling for years now with Nintendo's Switch catching up and potentially surpassing it with 36.87 million hybrid systems out in the wild after only 2.5 years.

With the PlayStation 5 and next Xbox on the horizon, however, game sales in total are down almost 20 percent from the same period last year though the percentage of games sold digitally has crossed the line of over one third of titles.

Sony has also tempered its expectations of how many PS4s the company will sell during its next fiscal year dropping projections from 15 million more systems down to 13.5 million.

PlayStation's time on top of the market has left them with a few PR black eyes as well after stifling the cross-platform play initiative until finally opening its doors more recently, so it'll be interesting to see how the early days of the next cycle will play out from a good will perspective in 2020.
