Daigo got beat up for defeating opponent at the arcades in his youth, wouldn't be where he is today if he didn't face his fear of going back

Gaming in your own home is quite a bit different than how it was back in the old days at arcades. By defeating random strangers, you ran the risk of getting beaten up if they became frustrated enough.

And this is exactly what happened to CYG|Daigo Umehara when he was 13. After beating an opponent that was in his 20s several times in a row at some fighting game, that individual's temper broke and he began to punch Daigo in the face.

As transcribed by FGC Translated, Daigo's decision following this has had a direct correlation on where he is today as a pro fighting game competitor.

Since Daigo was much younger than this individual, he ended up not fighting back out of fear. This resulted in many punches to poor Daigo's face.

"I'm not sure how many times he punched me," stated Daigo. "But my face was covered in blood and was badly swollen."

As a young teen, this had a lasting impression of Daigo. He was afraid to go back to that particular arcade despite it being his preferred place to play video games at.

His anger towards himself for doing nothing caused him to experience many restless nights. While he avoided that location as a result of the incident, Daigo was unable to have any fun playing his favorite fighting games at the other arcade that was near his house.

"One thing is for sure. If I decided to turn my back to that door because everything was silly, I wouldn't be where I am today." — Daigo Umehara

Eventually, he worked up his nerve and went back to that arcade. Standing in front of the door, however, he began to have second thoughts.

"When I got to the front door of the arcade, I couldn't move my hands to open the door," said Daigo. "I thought 'what if I open the door, and that guy is here?'

Daigo considered two different scenarios. Either he could leave and not risk getting attacked again, or he could potentially run into that individual again.

"But if I chose to turn around and go back home by bicycle, at least I won't get punched in the face," declared Daigo. "And I started to think which would be scarier. Then I realized that going back home without opening the door was scarier than the other by a long shot. I realized turning back would have a huge negative impact on my life."

Ironically, Daigo was only able to go back to that arcade a few more times before it eventually closed down. However, to Daigo this was a very powerful and defining moment.

"One thing is for sure," continued Daigo once more. "If I decided to turn my back to that door because everything was silly, I wouldn't be where I am today."
