Characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being fun to play is more important than just recognition according to Masahiro Sakurai

As of right now, there are 79 different characters playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Many of these are gaming icons such as Mario, Sonic, Snake, Banjo-Kazooie, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Cloud, Link, Pikachu, and many more.

Masahiro Sakurai revealed during the Terry Bogard demonstration video that "it's more important that a character is fun to play, not just recognizable."

Although Terry Bogard can be considered to be a gaming icon in his own right, it can be argued that he's less recognizable unless you're an avid fighting game fan. However, you don't necessarily need to be a follower of platformers to know who Mario is.

"When we released the original Nintendo 64 version of Super Smash Bros., I was often asked 'who is Samus?'" joked Sakurai. "Whether or not the character is fun to play as is more important than whether the character is new or old. Or whether the character is recognizable to everyone."

Sakurai noted during the presentation that he wanted to present Terry Bogard in such a way so that the viewers could fully understand his appeal. It was quickly understood why this particular video was the longest of the fighter breakdown videos thus far.

We've previously heard that Sakurai was able to choose fighters off a list provided by Nintendo. This was apparently true for those from the Fighters Pass and beyond.

Evidently, an important factor that Sakurai had to consider was how fun they'd be in the environment of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If he wasn't able to speculate on how they'd be fun, then it probably wouldn't be enough for them to make it into the roster.
