The old model of updating fighting games used to be players would need to buy an entirely new title to gain access to the added characters and features, but the prevalence of modern patches has mostly sent that to the wayside.

Arc System Works revealed players who currently own Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] on PlayStation systems will be able to upgrade to Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] next year via a mixture of free updates, paid DLC and discounts.

PS4 owners will see their copy of UNIST essentially update to the re-balanced version of UNICLR via a free patch, but additional content like the fighter Londrekia will still need to be purchased to get the complete package.

Players on PS3 and Vita — at least in Japan — will be able to upgrade their last generation UNIST games up to UNICLR on PS4 for a discounted price. Those who own the digital versions of the game will see an automatic price drop from 5,280 yen ($48 USD) down to 2,000 yen ($18).

Switch players will not be able to access these deals because the new title will be the first time Under Night has appeared on a Nintendo console while PC owners will need to wait until another port of the game is announced.

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] is currently in development for the PS4 and Switch with a Japanese and North American release date set for February 20, 2020. Europe will receive the fighting game early in 2020.
