One of Ryu's major issues demonstrated in this quick Street Fighter 5 clip

It's no secret that Street Fighter series poster boy Ryu has had a rough go at life in Street Fighter 5 over the last few seasons. After being one of the best characters in the game in Season 1, the classic Shoto saw nerfs that sent him spiraling down the tier list — and he's more or less remained there since then.

There are several factors that contribute to Ryu's weaker status in Street Fighter 5, but a recent clip from FGC lab monster Javits does a great job of showing one of the character's biggest issues in a quick and concise way.

The focal point of this clip is Ryu's crouching medium kick and its lack of range.

In the video, we see Ryu and Karin on screen. Ryu blocks a string of standing light kicks from Karin, then tries to counter with his crouching medium kick, but it just doesn't reach.

Without moving at all, Karin then fires back with a crouching medium kick of her own, and it lands. She is also able to confirm from said kick and get a full combo into V-Skill to build some meter.

Traditonally, Ryu is a character who excels at the mid-range, using zoning tools like crouching medium kick and fireballs to force the opponent to make mistakes. Even in a game like Street Fighter 5 where offense is definitely encouraged, having one of the main tools Ryu wants to use being fairly stubby hurts him quite a bit.

This is further shown by the fact that Karin, a character easily considered as one of the best in the game, not only out-ranges Ryu, but gets an optimal situation from her own crouching medium kick. She gets damage, she gets corner carry, she gets V-Gauge, and she gets okizeme.

It's worth noting that we're not saying "Karin has it, so Ryu should too!" Instead, this clip is meant to draw attention to an issue that Ryu fans have felt needs addressing for some time now.
