Ed Boon shares image of Rain in Mortal Kombat 11, but I'm not convinced that he's a playable DLC character just yet
Gullible IS in the dictionary, Boon!
Mortal Kombat 11 is expecting six DLC characters in its Kombat Pack, and according to series co-creator, Ed Boon, we might be seeing the reveal of some of them very soon.
We already know that Shang Tsung is joining the fight as DLC, but the other five fighters remain a mystery. Boon shared an image on Twitter yesterday that appears to show Rain in Mortal Kombat 11 fighting Raiden, but I'm not convinced that this is a confirmation of the purple ninja's inclusion just yet.
The image comes accompanied with a quote from Prince. "I never meant to cause you any pain......" Boon writes.
As far as I can tell, the Rain in this screenshot looks like an actual in-game render — not a crude Photoshop job. Outside of the obvious "it's actually Rain as a playable DLC character" explanation, there are a handful of theories floating around as to what this could be.
Some fans on Twitter think that this might be an edit of Sub-Zero's character model. Rain's stance doesn't match Sub-Zero's, however, but some think this might be Boon being crafty and grabbing a screenshot during a move animation to make the stance look unique.
The explanation that makes most sense to me, though, is Shang Tsung.

Yesterday, we learned that a full reveal of Mortal Kombat 11's first DLC fighter is coming sometime today. Later that same night, Boon shares a mysterious image of Rain.
Chances are Shang Tsung sees the return of his ability to transform into other fighters in Mortal Kombat 11, and I wouldn't be shocked if he has the ability to become characters like Rain who aren't in the game. For the sake of the fans, I do hope that Rain is also in as a playable character because if the MK developers made it so that Shang Tsung can become Rain and the ninja isn't even an actual fighter, there are going to be some very upset people out there.
If we want to go even deeper into what this whole thing could be, it might even be a scenario where Boon is flatout showing us a new DLC character because he knows that fans will be suspect of it with Shang Tsung's reveal coming soon. Though at this point the tinfoil hat is in full force.
One thing's for sure, we can expect to see what Shang Tsung is like in Mortal Kombat 11 at some point today.
