Rumor: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's 'Google Theory' may have revealed the four remaining characters of the Fighters Pass

Remember to take all rumors with a grain of salt... especially after the Grinch Leak

There's been a lot of rumors and speculation regarding the content of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass. Recently, a new theory has emerged directly from PapaGenos' Discord server.

Should the theory be taken at face value, then we may know the identities of the remaining four characters that will eventually show up in the Fighters Pass. Although PapaGenos himself has been adamant that he is leaning on "team fake," there are some very interesting details regarding this rumor.

The idea behind this rumor is that European users are only able to generate an ad for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's in a Google search with five specific characters — one of them being Joker from Persona 5 who is currently Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's 76th fighter and most recent addition.

Before initiating a search for these specific characters, a few steps need to be taken first. Remember that this process will only work while in Europe or while using the European Google search engine.

During the process, the user must be logged out of their Google account. Ad blockers must be turned off and the "signed off search activity" settings must be disabled.

After supposedly searching for hundreds of different characters, PapaGenos' Discord channel were only able to generate the Fighters Pass ad at the top of search results with Banjo and Kazooie, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Doom Slayer, and Artorias from Dark Souls.

Thanks to the efforts of Nicholas 'MajinTenshinhan' Taylor, our local resident European EventHubs tournament coverage specialist, we were able to double check these results ourselves.

Interestingly enough, we were only able to get the ad generated for Joker, Banjo, and Artorias by following these steps. Unfortunately, the same results could not be recreated with Ryu Hayabusa and Doom Slayer.

For the sake of a having a scientific control, we also attempted to recreate the Fighters Pass ad by searching for Erdrick from Dragon Quest, Geno from Super Mario RPG, Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia, Yuri from Tales of Vesperia, Dixie Kong from Donkey Kong Country, Ashley from WarioWare, Steve from Minecraft, Dante from Devil May Cry, Master Chief from Halo, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, 2B from Nier Automata, Goku from Dragon Ball Z, Mach Rider, Isaac from Golden Sun, and the Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven.

Strangely, we were not able to replicate the ad through any of these search results. Although this is in no way a confirmation of anything, it certainly was very interesting.

PapaGenos' Discord server has also taken notice that they're not always able to generate the Fighters Pass ad while searching for Ryu Hayabusa and Doom Slayer. Theories regarding these dubbed "blackout periods" have also been circulating.

During his videos, PapaGenos discusses the rumor regarding the Google Theory, some possible explanations, and more. As noted by PapaGenos, it's very important to take these rumors and theories with a grain of salt, especially after the whole "Grinch Leak" fiasco.

With E3 2019 coming very soon, we'll likely have information that either further corroborates this theory or debunks it entirely. Now we play the waiting game.
