The new Terminator: Dark Fate trailer further convinces me that Terminator is joining Mortal Kombat 11 as DLC

Several rumors and a movie release later this year are making it look more likely

Mortal Kombat 11 has six DLC characters en route with its Kombat Pack, and so far we only know the identity of one. Long-time Mortal Kombat boss Shang Tsung will be returning to the battlefield at some point, but who are the other five contenders that remain?

Over the past few months, there have been rumors that Terminator will be joining Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC fighter. The first official trailer for the upcoming movie Terminator: Dark Fate was released today, and the trailer itself, along with the film's release date, have me considering those rumors more closely. Potential Mortal Kombat 11 spoilers ahead.

The prospect of Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11 started back in February when the Steam database uploaded a list of trophies that included abbreviations for playable character names. Trophies included tasks such as "PERFORM 2 DIFFERENT FATALITIES WITH ERR" and "PERFORM 2 DIFFERENT FATALITIES WITH BAR," with those code names standing for Erron Balck and Baraka, respectively.

We noticed one trophy that had the abbreviation "TER," which led us to believe that this might be pointing to Terminator. Instead, TER seemed to represent Geras as there was no "GER" code listed and we later spotted an early screenshot of the game where "TER" was actually used for the time-bending fighter.

Terminator in MK11 was initially speculation on our part — due to the code name and the fact that he's one of those characters often requested to join the fight — but last month data miners found what could potentially be evidence of the cyborg's inclusion in the game.

Looking through the Nintendo Switch version's files, a Reddit user discovered several lines of code that they claim represents nine additional characters set to join Mortal Kombat 11 as DLC. Shang Tsung (who was officially revealed already), DC Comics' Joker, Nightwolf, Terminator, Sindel, Spawn, Ash Williams, Fujin, and Sheeva were all named.

Not long after, a Test Your Might forum user shared numerous lines of dialogue that are allegedly for these DLC characters. While it has not yet been confirmed if they're legitimate, they are definitely written in a very similar style to what we'd find in the pre-fight intros of Mortal Kombat 11, and they feature specific references that help further identify the characters.

Compelling as this evidence is, all of these claims are still just rumors. Bruce Campbell, the actor known for playing Ash Williams in the Evil Dead series, addressed the supposed leaks on Twitter essentially saying that they're bogus. Whether that means that Ash alone is not a playable character in the game or that the entire leak (including Terminator) is false is yet to be determined.

All of that having been said, the Terminator: Dark Fate movie trailer definitely has me leaning more toward the side of the rumors being true.

For starters, this is the first major Terminator film since Terminator Genisys back in 2015. Its official release date is slated for November 1, 2019, and it happens to be coming in the same time frame we can likely expect to see the rest of Mortal Kombat 11's DLC characters released.

On top of that, the Terminator: Dark Fate trailer gives us a look at a new T-1000-like threat, as well as an older, more distinguished version of Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic Terminator. Mortal Kombat 11 has a heavy focus on time travel and we see older versions of several of the series' main characters, so it's totally plausible that the latest Terminator could be included as the default design with skins that make him young again.

NetherRealm Studios has a track record for scoring some of the best and most surprising guest characters in their fighting games. We've seen Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat 9, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, the Xenomorph from Alien, and Predator in Mortal Kombat X, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hellboy in Injustice 2.

Each time they bring a big guest character in, it seems to top the last one. If they want to hit hard again with guest characters in Mortal Kombat 11, Terminator is certainly a great choice.
