Update: We've added new and official screenshots for Granblue Fantasy Versus which you can find after the jump featuring the characters Katalina, Charlotta, Gran, Lancelot and Ferry.

Arc System Works has been on a roll in recent years with their fighting game division between Guilty Gear Xrd, BlazBlue and Dragon Ball FighterZ, and now Granblue Fantasy Versus looks poised to be the next strong fighter to add to their catalog.

Players won't need to wait much longer to get their hands on the PlayStation 4 fighting game for the first time because Granblue Fantasy Versus will be running a closed beta beginning on May 31 for online warriors around the world.

Applications for the beta are now open on the game's website for English and Japanese speakers though it will close on May 24 at 11 p.m. PDT. Selected participants will be emailed their code to partake on May 28.

There will be three five-hour test periods when servers are live beginning May 31 at 2 a.m. PDT and ending June 1 at 2 p.m. PDT. Modes, characters and features available in the beta have not been announced, but Granblue's website states that its primary goal is to test online connectivity and that most offline features will be unavailable.

Granblue Fantasy Versus and the action game spin-off Relink are also going to be heavily featured across a 10-page spread on June's Official PlayStation Magazine UK where the series' director, Tetsuya Fukuhara revealed more information about the fighter's gameplay and focus.

"We consulted with Arc System Works to see how they decided on which characters to include in the initial releases of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Great care is being taken to model every character’s movesets and animations to match with their originals and bring them to life. - Tetsuya Fukuhara"

Fukuhara states that Granblue Fantasy Versus has a completely different battle system than the likes of Guilty Gear or BlazBlue and that it's slower in comparison. Combos are reportedly simplified and all special moves can be activated with a button press without a motion.

Despite that, Fukuhara believes that "this simple but deep system will allow for interesting strategies," and the game is being developed with eSports in mind.

"Many people think of fighting games when they hear 'eSports,' and that's another genre we want to take a stab at," said Fukuhara via Gematsu. "When the time comes to hold [Granblue Fantasy] Versus tournaments, we'll be sure to deliver something great for fans of Granblue, eSports enthusiasts and spectators alike."

Since Granblue is owned by Cygames, the company has decided to have two of their most well-known sponsored players in CYG|Daigo Umehara and CYG|Fuudo face off in their new fighting game which they released a preview for with the beta reveal. Their full match will be uploaded sometime in the near future.

This brief glimpse at the FGC legends' matches does give us our first good look at Versus' meters, however, where it appears that specials will be used by hitting a button plus a direction like Super Smash Bros. or Blade Strangers. On top of that, each special also appears to have a cooldown timer like Rising Thunder's or those found in some RPGs.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is currently set to release worldwide at some point in 2019 for PS4. You can check out the full closed beta schedule below plus the match preview for Daigo versus Fuudo in the new fighting game.
