The king of character action has returned

Update: We've closed both of our polls, so you can see after the jump which version of Dante people like best from the main Devil May Cry series and spin-off / crossover games.

Devil May Cry originally began production as an early version of Resident Evil 4 though it would soon shift into its own series that would go on to create a new genre that, like fighting games, also has a focus on combos and style.

Now over 10 years since the last mainline title in the franchise released, Devil May Cry 5 is preparing to kick some demon ass for its launch on March 8 though reviews are already largely praising the new title considering it currently sits with a Metacritic score of 88.

Given Dante's tie to fighting games and his popularity amongst many in the community, we thought it'd be fun to look back at just how much the iconic demon hunter's looks have changed over the past 19 years between five mainline games, multiple fighting game inclusions, an ill-fated reboot and a number of other spin-off and cameo appearances.

He always comes sporting his red jacket and white hair — unless we're talking about DmC — but many aspects of his costumes, gameplay and even personality shift between titles though his sense for style, dangerous adventures and stunts never changes.

Dante made his first fighting game roster in 2011 with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 alongside his partner Trish where his design was largely based on his Devil May Cry 3 appearance with the open red leather jacket with his bare chest underneath... though perhaps a bit aged up compared to his youngster self from the base game. This coupled with his orignial look would largely be his primary outfitting for fighting games and crossovers going forward — except for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale which used rebooted Dante.

While he may have been perhaps the best individual character in his last foray into fighting games, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Dante's design / character model unfortunately left much to be desired to say the least after we first saw those eyes of his.

If there ever is a Marvel vs. Capcom 4, we sure do hope the king of character action reprises his role alongside Vergil and hopefully Nero as well. You can take a look at all of Dante's major incarnations in the gallery below, and you can vote after the jump for which you think are your favorite designs for the fabled son of Sparda — we may have also thrown in the MvC3 opening for old times sake too.
