Dead or Alive 6's first Season Pass is $93... which isn't anything new for the series

Downloadable content has become a major part of planning for developers and publishers in video games over the past decade looking to add extra value and longevity to their titles while bringing in more money for profits and to offset the growing cost of making games.

Fighting games are now one of the most monetized genres in the industry with successful games receiving multiple years of support with updates in combination with DLC packs ranging from costumes and characters to online titles or different looking health bars.

Dead or Alive 6 officially launched yesterday and alongside it came its first Season Pass which wouldn't normally be seen as a big deal... except players and people around the internet were surprised at just how expensive it is.

Season Pass 1 for DOA6 costs $92.99 USD — more than the base game or even deluxe edition — which largely came as a shock for everyone... excluding Dead or Alive players.

If you take a look at the PlayStation Store or any other digital games marketplace, you'll see that Dead or Alive 5 Last Round had seven different Season Passes with at least five of them also costing $92.99 — the final one was priced at $74.49 while the fourth was de-listed.

That price for a DLC bundle is still exorbitant, but well over 90 percent of their included content are costumes with new character inclusions being few and far between for those passes, for better or worse, as you can see in comparison screens below showing what some of the seasons came with in the past next to DOA6.

Dead or Alive 6's Season Pass 1 includes 62 new costumes and two new characters with SNK's Mai Shiranui plus a currently unknown King of Fighters representative where everything in said bundle is scheduled to be released before the end of June 2019.

In comparison, Dead or Alive 5 averaged around 95 costumes for between its first five available passes plus two re-tooled characters equaling out to a little less than a dollar per outfit — which is about half of what they cost when purchased by themselves.

Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have not announced how their costumes and characters will be priced individually, so we don't know how it will ultimately compare as it stands now.

It also seems fairly apparent by this point that these Season Passes are not catered towards the average player or consumer base, but there must be enough of a market out there of players that want every cosmetic piece for Team Ninja to continue putting development resources towards bucket loads of new costumes.

Dead or Alive 5 by the end of its lifespan had well over 1,000 costumes available which probably overshadows every other modern fighting game combined, and it looks as though DOA6 will be at least attempting to try and follow a similar path.
