EVO 2019 is just over a week away, and of course the biggest fighting game event of the year is going to pull in some of the biggest sponsors and partners around the video gaming sphere.

The organizers behind EVO have announced that PlayStation will be an official partner for the event which isn't surprising given that eight of the nine mainstage titles are going to be played on PS4. What may be more of a surprise though is that it appears that Sony may have their own announcement during the tournament.

"Don't miss any of the action and stay tuned for more news from PlayStation at EVO!" reads in part of the official announcement of the partnership though it remains unclear as to what that news will end up entailing.

Sony had initially gotten fairly heavily involved with the fighting game community earlier this console generation after helping fund the development of Street Fighter 5 though they've been mostly quieter on that front since aside from event sponsorships like these.

During the PS3 era, Sony did create their own Super Smash Bros.-like title in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale which managed to surpass 1 million units in sales. It was not seen as successful enough to warrant additional DLC or a sequel, however, leading to the cancellation of in development / planned characters and stages.

Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Soul Calibur 6, Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Shodown, Under Night In-Birth and Dragon Ball FighterZ will all be run on PS4 at EVO 2019 for the console that has seen the most fighting game support this time around. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be headlining Sunday finals this year which will obviously be played on the Nintendo Switch.
