Mortal Kombat 11 beat by Mario Maker 2 and Crash Team Racing in June's NPD; Super Smash Bros. Ultimate keeps selling and Samurai Shodown is left off

NetherRealm's latest effort is still the best selling game of the year

Mortal Kombat 11 got off to a tremendous start earlier this year topping the NPD group's best-selling game chart in the United States in both April and May, but it couldn't quite keep that momentum going for a third consecutive month on top.

Super Mario Maker 2 and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled topped the NPD charts for June 2019 though Mortal Kombat 11 would still receive the bronze medal while still keeping its place as biggest game of the year thus far.

Super Mario Maker 2 had a stronger launch than the previous two titles released on Wii U and 3DS. Meanwhile, Crash Team Racing sold even more than the N. Sane Trilogy during its launch month for the biggest initial release sales in franchise history.

While MK11 dropped out of June's top slot, it is still the best-selling game of 2019 thus far. The new fighter has also surpassed MK9's lifetime sales, and currently only trails behind Mortal Kombat X and 3.

Mortal Kombat 11 was also the top seller on Xbox One for June overall and third on PlayStation 4. It did not, however, crack the top 10 on Nintendo Switch.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is continuing to sell strong seven months after its initial release as still the sixth best-selling title overall for June and second best on Nintendo Switch behind Mario Maker. The game is still listed at 13.81 million worldwide units sold as of March 31, 2019.

Though Samurai Shodown released in the last week of June like Mario Maker 2, SNK's new fighting game didn't manage to make the top 20 in the United States which probably isn't surprising given its status outside of the hardcore and dedicated FGC audience.

Sales certainly weren't bad news for Samurai Shodown overall, however, as the rebooted fighter saw double the launch week sales of The King of Fighters 14 from a few years back in its home country of Japan.
