Samurai Shodown's launch sales in Japan doubled that of King of Fighters 14 in its first week

And it did even better than SNK Heroines too

Samurai Shodown has been out in the wild for more than a week now, and the most recent foray for SNK into the fighting game genre appears to have caught the attention of the FGC and fans around the world.

SNK has revealed that Samurai Shodown — known as Samurai Spirits in Japan — sold through 40,606 copies in its first week on store shelves in its home country which is essentially double the numbers that The King of Fighters 14 pulled back in 2016.

The developer's big return to its flagship series on consoles sold 20,655 units in its first week while SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy managed to push 15,511 copies on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch last September.

Another good sign of the return of SamSho's fortunes in Japan came from a statement from SNK the day after the game released in Japan in which they announced that it had already sold out or was short in stock at some retailers already and that more shipments would be on the way soon.

For comparison's sake, looking back at the bigger fighting game releases of the past year will show that Samurai Shodown's Japanese launch looks quite favorable unless you look at the juggernaut that is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Dragon Ball FighterZ sold 68,731 copies in its first week on PS4 in Japan while BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle pushed 15,967 units total week one, Soul Calibur 6 did 24,049 copies, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection moved 21,441 discs / cartridges and finally Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crushed over 1.2 million in just a few days. Dead or Alive 6 managed to sell 26,442 PS4 copies week one earlier this year.

While we don't know how the game is selling in the West yet, SNK did also reveal that around one quarter of Samurai Shodown's launch numbers were digital purchases. Plus, there are still the Nintendo Switch, PC and arcade versions that are sure to add to that total which appears to be a good sign of growth for the company as far as its home territory is concerned.
