Kizuna Encounter is an SNK fighting game that only had 5 copies made in Europe and now it's tagged back into the fight on modern consoles

SNK was one of the leading fighting game developers / publishers of the 90's, but for every King of Fighters or Samurai Shodown, there'd be probably two other games that have been largely forgotten to time unless you managed to play them in arcades.

Now, many of those more obscure titles are finding their way back to modern consoles via the ACA NeoGeo classics like Ragnagard last week. Kizuna Encounter fits that mold fairly well and is the latest to join the ever growing roster of digital SNK titles available across platforms.

First released in 1996, Kizuna Encounter is actually the sequel to the game Savage Reign from the year before and featured a fairly unique tag system for its era — though some of its aspects would live on in titles like Tekken Tag Tournament.

Though it is a 2D weapon based fighter like Samurai Shodown, Kizuna Encounter plays more similarly to Real Bout Fatal Fury except for the added tag mechanics. Players can only tag out in their designated zones instead of anywhere on the stage, and a round will be lost if only one character's life is drained.

Only five European NeoGeo cartridges are known to be in existence for the region which makes it a much sought after item for collectors though now everyone will be able to easily try out the game no matter where they live or which current consoles they own.

Kizuna Encounter is now available on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One as an ACA NeoGeo classic title for $7.99. You can get a closer look at the game in the gallery below and in the video after the jump courtesy of MrEdxwx.
