Super Smash Bros. Melee was originally released on November 21, 2001 in Japan. For Americans, the game came out on December 1, 2001.

Despite the fact that the game is over 17-years-old, the community is still staying strong. The Genesis 6 Melee event had over 1,100 entrants ready to compete.

While the top eight portion of Super Smash Bros. Melee was being streamed, it was the number one game in terms of viewership in the U.S. It had over 151,000 viewers at its peak.

Notably, it beat out many other titles like Fortnite, Sea of Thieves, League of Legends, and World of Warcraft. Clearly this was very impressive.

Now it is worth noting that Genesis 6 was running a bit late at this point. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was scheduled to have already started.

One can imagine that some of these viewers were just sticking around for Ultimate's top eight to kick off. Still, it's crazy to imagine that this game was released 17 years ago. Not only this, but there have been three sequels released since then and people have been sticking with this game.
